Writing Weekend

Dear Unfinished Journal Article Sitting in My Drafts Folder:

Hey, buddy! I’ve been thinking about you so much lately, but I haven’t taken the time to write. I know you get it!

How are you doing? I miss you! I can't believe it's been EIGHT months! Yeesh.

As I’m sure you can imagine, life has been really full lately! But things are great and I should be able to spend some time with you in a couple of months (fingers crossed!). I can’t wait to see you!

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know why I haven’t been in touch lately:

  1. I’m super busy.
  2. I’m just doing a little extra lit review so that when we do sit down together, we’ll be good to go.
  3. I get sweaty and nervous every time I think about you.
  4. I really am busy — I just haven’t been able to carve out the time.

I promise I’ll visit soon. Take care!

PS. Sorry again! I feel so guilty.

Join me for a virtual Writing Weekend

April 21-22, 2018

For researchers who have a half-finished paper hanging around their neck.

Get your paper finished and off to your target journal—in a weekend.

the Writing Weekend is designed to give you:

Strategies to improve your writing

All you have to do is show up for the weekend, ready to write.

The program is flexible, so you can make the weekend into whatever works best for you.

And I'll be  cheering you on every step of the way.

Stop procrastinating! Use the Writing Weekend as the push you need to finish that draft and get it out to a journal.

Here's the best part: make the most of your weekend's work when you get MY eyeballs on YOUR paper with a 30-minute consultation call. (Spots are limited,  so let this be the moment you stop procrastinating!)

Here's how it works:

Pre-Weekend Prep

Get ready to make the most of the weekend by making sure you have a few key elements and strategies in place. Whether this is new material or a refresher for you, you'll be ready to hit the ground running.

Saturday is about structure and strategy. Learn how to write compelling introductions and focused lit reviews, and learn how to apply an unusual—but vitally important—academic writing skill. Apply these principles to your own work in guided revising sessions and a group Office Hour (hosted by MOI).

Sunday is about mechanics. Learn my triple-pass revising system and get a totally useful, not-at-all-boring grammar refresher. Why? Because you don't want your paper to be a snoozefest (I'll teach you how to keep things interesting). More guided revising sessions and another group Office Hour are on the agenda to help you finish strong.

Bonus (only 10 available)

Get a 30-minute consultation call with me! Send me your draft paper and I'll help you figure out where it needs the most attention (e.g., introduction and framing, sentence structure, discussion). The call can be scheduled before or immediately after the Writing Weekend, so you can decide when it will be most helpful for you. (PS. This consultation is worth MORE than the cost of the entire weekend!)

Answers to your questions:

Do I need to have a draft article to participate?

Yes! This weekend works best when you're at least 70% of the way there. You could always use this weekend as a kick in the pants to get started, but you'll get better results if you have something to work with.

How much time do I need to set aside?

You'll have the most success if this is the *one thing* you do for the weekend. If you can clear your schedule and spend the weekend writing: great! If not: join for as much as you can, and you can finish on your own time. All the lessons can be viewed (and re-viewed) whenever you want; it's just the guided writing sessions and and the office hours that are scheduled.

What if I can't make it for some of the sessions? What if I can't make it at all for april 21 and 22?

Can't make the weekend, but you can carve out a couple of days during the week? Great! Watch the video lessons at your own pace and create a private writing retreat for yourself (I recommend a terrycloth bathrobe and some nice tea). You'll miss the group part, but a little self-motivation goes a long way. And you can still get the private consultation with me. This might be fine for you if you're reasonably self-directed, but if you think you need the structure and the community, I'd suggest waiting for the next Writing Weekend (scheduled for July).

What if I don't finish my paper over the weekend?

Then do your best to keep the momentum going afterwards! This weekend program is a mix of teaching, self-directed activity, and group support. I can provide structure, guidance, and support, but I can't do the writing for you!

How much does it cost?

Since this is the first time I'm offering it, the Writing Weekend is available for $199 CDN (taxes all in)—including a bonus one-on-one consultation with me! This is a crazy good deal, and I won't be offering it at this price again.

Can I use departmental funds for this?

You should definitely ask! You'll need to pay for the course via credit card and get reimbursed, and you can request a detailed invoice to submit to your institution.

When can I Schedule the bonus call?

You can schedule the call up to one week prior to the Writing Weekend, or up to one week after—your choice, depending on what you think will be most useful for you. Keep in mind that you'll need to send me your work in advance!

Let this be the push you need to finally finish that paper.
